Build your business to sell a company. I'm going to share with you two very important, very valuable lessons. Lesson number one, build your business to sell it. I learned this from my grandfather.

And if you're watching this, you're probably very similar to me. When anybody would ask me, What do you want to do? My answer was always, I want to own my own business.  As a child, I spent a lot of time with my grandparents and the only thing that I knew was my grandfather owned his own business. Looking back though, also now realize there was a pattern.

He would start a business, grow it and sell it. I recall him owning restaurants, hotels, office buildings, apartment complexes. At one point, he owned a bingo hall and he owned many other businesses.
And I also noticed that he was home a lot. No wonder I wanted to own my own business. He made it look really easy.

Now that I've had more than 30 years of my own entrepreneurial journey, I know it's not easy. Here's lesson number two Transform your business into a company and sell your company. And that's why I say build a business to sell a company.  What I've learned on my entrepreneurial journey and throughout my childhood was that companies are more valuable than businesses.

Let's look at one of my grandfather's companies, a hotel. If he were to have built that hotel and then sold it, he would not have gotten as much as if he would have built the hotel, started to run it, hired managers, clerks, maintenance crews and housekeeping people.
